The Day Narrowband Ruled
Posted by narrowband - 27/12/06 at 06:12:40 pmSeriously. It’s a day when everybody’s broadband was screwed by the earthquake in Taiwan. We thought that there was some problem with our router, so we restarted it. Several times. At least 5 clients had called to complain about a service outage, and that their webmail was not working. The same thing happened to us. Our tech support guy had been busy the moment he stepped into office. After some troubleshooting, we figured that it might not have been our problem after all. So we called Tmnet.
They said that there was a tsunami and that some international links were damaged off Taiwan. We went like “Oh..”. I did hear about an earthquake but I didn’t think it disrupted internet connections. Strangely enough, some news sources only mentioned ‘earthquake’, but no tsunami. Some other sources said that a 3-foot high tsunami had hit the Philippines. Whatever the case, we internet users suffer. US-based sites were hardly accessible. Google, though, seemed almost unaffected.
Still, most of Google’s search results were inaccessible. As for Google News, exerpts from each result have been very helpful. I got most of my updates from there. Anyway I dread to think how long more this ordeal is going to last. Crawling on the net is so frustrating.

Bib, I could still access ur site so I guess it wasn’t *that* bad, heh. But really, when I couldn’t proceed with my work there was only one place to go to..: PPS, lol!
Cincau, believe it or not, that’s exactly how this name came about – been using it years ago.. It’s just that yesterday was the day the internet came to a crawl – Pretty much the same time I got narrowband.org up and running. What a way to ‘commemorate’ my launching of the site huh..

[...] We exchanged gifts in the office last week. And I actually took home something about 10 (that’s t-e-n) times bigger than what I had brought there. We’ll get to that later. About a coupla hours ago, I was at a special Christmas-themed Toastmasters meeting and yes – you’ve guessed it – we exchanged gifts too. [Note: There are about 15 photos. But given the current internet speed, I’ve made this post ‘narrowband-friendly‘ (pun intended)]. [...]
