Take Me Up, Down, Left and Right
These days it seems like we just cannot live without navigation buttons that help us move our selection up, down, left or right. Here are some examples of such buttons:-

Of the six devices in the picture above, all have good, robust designs except for one. No prizes for correctly guessing which one. It’s been giving me a lot of headaches lately. It gets very frustrating when you can’t go a certain direction, and there is no other way to do it!

astro.. should be self explanatory.. everyone knows how to use it.. except for my mom.
astro max.. last i heard it’s from philips.. shouldnt be a problem there…
sony… i doubt sony got userfriendlyness issues.. same with the k700…
so.. i’ll put 1 cent on LG and lumix. :P
come to think of it. i’ll put everything on LG. :P
Ah dude, of all things you missed the answer. It’s the K700i that’s screwed up.
WTF? really? I thought the astro max had TWO sets of nav buttons lor.
“…and there is no other way to do it!” - Sorry I was referring to only the problematic device - my trusty k700i.
Other devices sometimes do not rely heavily (read: solely) on these buttons. For example, in nokia phones you can still access the menu using the num pad. K700i does not have such a feature so if the joystick ain’t working, that’s it, you’re done.
Thanks for dropping by, Chris ;)
I wanted to guess it’s the K700i, coz I have the same problem too…
But, you revealed the answer already… :(
sony ericson always like that. i think it’s way to complicated. samsung is halfway complicated. so i change to nokia which is free of complication! haha
[…] 5) i liked “narrowband” for a blog name because it’s catchy. this is also the persona of the blogger. this post reminds me that we’re way too immersed in a remote control-based world. […]
u mean they’re all from different devices! *shock*
Yeah Huimian, it’s a common problem for all K700i users :(
Pink - Yeah I don’t mind a Nokia, actually. The only problem is their Mp3 audio is not as good as Sony Ericsson’s - but that should be an issue compared to lousy joysticks.
Wuching ;)
hmm.. i dont know about k700.. but k800 doesnt use the numpad for nav as well.. but they do map their menus on the numpad.. which is kinda hard to use if you cant see the submenus…
so.. yea.. nokia still rules user friendliness. :P
something off note but the title of this post can be misleading sometimes.. not for grown up like u and me but there must be someone out there who was dissapointed reading the content of this post.. hehe..
Cincau - How much you bought your K800 for? ;p
You dirty-minded Jian!
Yeah my sis’ K700i buttons also buat hal.
Ya, so what are you waiting for - quick get her a new one using your PPP earnings :P. Bila nak belanja?
K700i not only can navigate with joystick, also can navigate with number pad. U see there is 12 menus on the main screen, so use ur 12 number pads to go to the page. Also use number to scroll down to the page you want.. ^__^ But now I fall in love at first sight with Nokia 7373.. Aww.. Pink~~
Gosh I didn’t realize that. I usually move ‘left’ to compose a new message. Sometimes even pressing the joystick down (to get into the menu) is difficult. I quickly give up. In any case, the joystick design is still bad.
That’s a lot of remote controls! Hehe.. Better get a universal remote. :)
Well Jaypee, some functions are pretty specific - It’s hard to find a generic remote control that covers every single function for all devices. Haha. Then again, it’s all about laziness. Never considered the idea of getting a universal remote!
