What Have A’s Got to Do With It?
I read with much amazement the story in The Star today, “Nadiah gets only 18 As instead”. You know, with news reports such as this, I’m afraid we may be sending out a wrong signal to future SPM candidates: “Get as many A’s as possible”. It seems like it doesn’t matter for which subjects you ace, as long as you have enough of them. The pressure piled on these students is immense. For instance, Nadiah was expected to score 19 A’s (holy smokes that’s almost twice the number of subjects I took) even before the results were released. Luckily, her results didn’t turn out that bad. In fact, they’re mind-blowing.
But the quest for strings of A’s is understandable. How often do you hear people asking “Which subjects did you get an A for?”?. Save for future employers, very few are interested in knowing which subjects you aced. Even fewer are interested in knowing what extra curricular activities you joined. There is little doubt that great emphasis is placed on scoring A’s. So much so that some tuition centers even provide ‘tips’, and claim to be able to ’spot’ or predict SPM questions accurately. I used to have friends who’d travel all the way to KL to attend a very popular tuition center. These days, ‘good’ tuition centers train students on how to tackle exam questions.
A lot of focus is put on answering the questions correctly, what keywords to use, familiarizing oneself with the question patterns, and how they are asked. Stacks of past-year papers, sample papers and worksheets are used in drilling these students. Is this what our education system was set out to be? Studying for the sake of getting as many A’s as possible in exams? How much of knowledge really went into a student’s head is questionable. To make matters worse, I’ve even heard of some ‘privileged’ schools giving students sample papers that are very much similar to the real paper, a few weeks earlier. I wonder if such practices are effective in educating the teenagers, although I don’t know how far this is true.
The ministry’s proposal to limit the number of SPM subjects a student can register is timely (Sorry, I just read that this won’t realize). Perhaps, more weightage should be given to developing a student’s leadership, thinking, interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills - practical skills that could be useful throughout his life, and not just during the examinations. A student’s excellent SPM achievement does not reflect any of these qualities. I’d like to mention one example (oh I love it when I talk about this; no prizes for guessing why), the Moral Education. Scoring an A1 for this subject does not make a student any ‘less immoral’ compared to students who scored otherwise. It only means that he can memorize things better. And yes, they will be quickly forgotten after the exam is over.
How practical is that? Yet, no one cares - as long as it’s an A and that’s all that matters. It’s time we placed less emphasis on scoring as many A’s as possible, and focused instead on producing more well-rounded individuals. We don’t want someone who can’t perform past the exam period. If a student obtained say, 14, or 15 A’s (not for every subject), does that mean he’s better than one who obtained a 10-straight (perfect) A’s? Sadly though, most scholarships offered are based on the number of A’s a student has. Sigh.
Note: An “A1″ here means “1A” formally. I prefer to suffix the “1″, just like the olden days.

A’s aside, throughout the next month, we will be reading news on top scorers won’t be getting their first choice of courses / university.
And again, so many A’s yet they have problem communicating, spoken English and etc.
Sad.

Wah! Where got so many subjects wan? 15? Seow arh! I only took 8 subjects. Malaysia how come got so many extra subjects? Win liao lor! hehe…….
19 subjects?! I’m so glad we are way over this.. can’t help but feel for my younger cousins, sad tat it’s going to be this way..
7 years back it was 10 subjects, now it’s 19, another 7 years in 2014 it’s gonna be 28 subjects?! wholly cow it’s even more than our university courses!!!
hmmm… i just did a post on the SPM results today as well.
these people are no longer students… they are just machine, programmed to transfer the words from the books to the exam sheets. have met too many high flyer graduates who cant produce a simple piece of work in the working world.
[…] asked how getting a string of A’s could become a nation’s educational priority instead of producing well-rounded individuals. […]
Jason - Yes that has happened in the past. Let’s hope this year everybody gets what they want!
ECL - No M’sia is not trying to compete with anyone by introducing so many subjects! I heard the standard of SPM has dropped over the years.
Jian - No, I wish I hadn’t sat for the SPM! You know why? Because I heard it’s much easier to score A’s now. *Kiasu mode*
Good stuff, Zewt. I concur!
this kiasu bzness has got to stop. If a student can get so many A!, and has so little time to get it: it only means the standard is not as it was. In school they are only taught the few subjects. and they can get A1 from self study?
a few students is ok but so many?
The tau keis should actually look through all these comments posted by their seniors lar.. See how ridiculous is it to take so many subjects.
firstly i like to thank you for visiting my blog, give me any comment since i am new blogger.. ^^
second, i think that your whole post does make sense.. all the way during education, more theories being pushed into students instead of getting hands-on.. i believe some choose to memorize things that easier ended up they failed when working due to lesser practical.. i think the point that producing a student to be better problem solver turns out to produce a better memory peoples…
That’s so crazy. Gone are the day when you had 5As and people would go Wow!
From my experience, I discovered that a lot of Univ. students, many of whom were straight A scorers, are incompetent in language skills, their general knowledge is pitiful and not inquisitive enough. Don’t know who’s to blame.
Why are they so kiasu huh? I only took 9 subjs and it almost killed me. 18As? Crazy!
Did you hear about the news where this father claimed his 13 year old kid scored 24A1s? What a scam.. tsk. I LOLed :p
i think..
1. SPM sucks
2. The 14 A1,4A2,B3 girl…sucks to …coz she’s gonna release 2 books soon. She’s only 17. Soon ppl will be writing how well they did their UPSR
3. Malaysia’s going for the world record. Most exams by a student at a single time. Malaysia Boleh !!
4. What happened to the previous 18A1’s girl ? Gone bonkers in UNI ? How come no write ups ?
5. MMU rocks.
Sekian terima kasih.
p/s: your blog rocks..hehe
So what’s the point you score more A’s? It doesn’t mean he/she is a genius. Look at the last year best SPM result winner, she failed in UK after government sponsored her everything there. How shame!
Beng - Many believe that the standard of SPM has indeed dropped over the years. Like the Director of MES said, there’s no point in taking Bio, Physics, Chemistry, and on top of that, an additional “General Sciences” paper. If you can score 1A for the first three, you can definitely do the same for General Sciences.
Deng - The problem is, these days there is a need to be extra kiasu because any tom, dick and harry can enter a university and get a degree. Therefore in order to outshine the others, they do this. Good for them, this approach seems to work - for now.
Alex - No wonder those tuition centers that teach students how to memorize well are earning money!
Adam - Hopefully employers don’t overlook graduates who don’t have straight A’s splashed on their transcripts!
Julee - Why? I think if they could answer you, they’d say one thing in unison: ‘Because we can!’. 24A1’s is out of this world~! Don’t tell me the ministry is going to let the numbers continue to rise - The day when someone gets 20 A’s and above, is the day when they should really consider capping the subjects at somewhere around 13-15.
Wonder - Well I think releasing books at such an age, is ok. In fact, I find her very entrepreneurial. However, she is a victim in the sense that everyone expects too much of her. The pressure and all, y’know. She’s only 17. And on point (5).. hehe, I actually have mixed thoughts. But that’s another story for another time.
Kenny - Are you sure? I didn’t know about that. But I am not surprised. I just hope she doesn’t get too depressed and go do something stupid, like drugs or something, because of all the pressure (national-pressure!). Really can’t expect too much from these students - Scoring As in SPM and doing well in university are two entirely *very* different things.
Thanks for dropping by, everyone!

well…honestly… i think spm doenst have much use oso… besides getting into local u or stpm… coz most of the well known university wont accept spm into 1st yr of study… the more As they get nowadays seems so easily as if ther’s no standard to it… i would really like to see the government increase the difficulties and plus…something that is really important..that is not to mark liniently.. i ever heard a story whereby a person only did half the Qs in Add math exam but turned out b3 wierd huh? even he himself cant confirm all the Qs he attempted is correct… but anyway, spm is really just a small part of life.. just get thru it thats all… for chinese, scoring as much As as possible is important as its harder for us to get into the local u (with your preffered choice of course somemore)… no offence… but thats the truth… i would really recommend ppl taking up A levels as there’s a certain standard n recognition there…
