Personal Scribblings and a Peek into My Old Blog
Weekends. How I love weekends. The past week hasn’t been very kind to me, except on my birthday when my friends touched me with their text, YM, email, MSN and Friendster messages. A few even wished me on their blogs, and I just felt like running over to their place and giving them a big, warm narrowhug. I had a simple family dinner over at Italiannies, where the crew even sang two songs for me - complete with a tambourine accompaninent, at that! (Ok, not so ’simple’ after all, huh?). All of that, including the birthday celebrations since as early as April, meant so much to me and it couldn’t have been more wonderful.
Screwed Up Recruitment Process
One of my employment applications had run into some problems, after having gone through a period of grueling recruitment process. It was a case of ’so close yet so far’. I realized I was motivated by all that hope and expectations and when I wasn’t offered the division I wanted, it hit me hard. I lost confidence, hope and heck, appetite too. Would you believe that the HR people didn’t even know the difference between electrical and electronics? I had to play the good guy and explain to them the difference and the next thing I knew, my eardrums rang of “oooohh… I see”. They also thought “IT” and “engineering” were similar.
A friend offered consolation, “There’s a reason why she is in HR you know”, referring to the HR lady who spoke to me. Ah, that put a smile on my face, albeit a faint one. I’ve withdrawn my application, and I’m not sure about other offers right now. I’m still looking for other opportunities. I’ve since recovered from that ’shock’, and reviewed my goals. I now have sights on something else. With this renewed hope, I’m back to square one again. Admittedly, when things get repetitive, it gets a little tiring and like the Hokkien would say, sien. But giving up is not even an option. So there. To my close friends who’ve talked to me about it, I’m feeling great today! Two days ago, a friend, XY, called and we somehow touched on this. She related a similar personal experience and I thought that was very nice of her to share.
Note to Self: Short-term Goals
I actually came up with a coupla short-term goals, since I’ve finished my studies:-
- Pick up reading again
- Obviously get a damn job
- Get my CC by completing 3 more Toastmasters speeches
- Return to gym, and be consistent!
- Improve my Mandarin (I now can read more, but not enough!)
Back to Gym
I finally went to the gym the other day - after having been absent for about a month, no thanks to the hectic schedule in university. After the final exams, I lacked motivation and bummed around a little longer while wallowing in the post-exam bliss. Mr A, who had been as inactive as me, was even talking about paying the termination fee and quitting altogether. That’s not a good sign, heh. Anyway, that night I was knocked out by the time I finished the third set working out my arms. Came home and dived right into bed. Well, sorta.
Writing is ‘In’ Again
Also, to my newfound ‘pen pal’ (gee I wonder how often the term ‘pen pal’ is used today, what with all that tech and stuff), thanks for the exchanges. Bet you didn’t know I could churn out so many words in an email. It’s been a while since I wrote lengthy emails. (Identity of my ‘pen pal’ is withheld to maintain anonymity!!).
A Blast into the Past
Have you ever heard of the Internet Archive Wayback Machine? It’s a pretty ambitious project that aims to archive the web. I tried it out and guess what, I saw my old blog! Oh the memories… *sobs*. I started the blog, named Living Gem (http://narrowband.blogspot.com - don’t bother visiting, the URL now belongs to someone I dunno) in 2004 and had been active until some time in 2006, I deleted it. I still keep all the archives with me though. I somehow felt that the direction Living Gem was headed wasn’t quite like what I’d expected. I wasn’t comfortable with that. There were lots of personal entries and my readership base was mushrooming. Ah, n00b, I was. That’s partly why I wrote So You Want to be a Blogger?
Anyway, I tried that Internet Archive thingy and found 2 pages of my old blog archived on December 13th, 2005 and February 2nd, 2006 (you may click to view them). As you can see, I loved to customize my blog according to festive seasons… hehe. In the archived pages, please don’t mind that center column’s position - it appears to be slightly ‘bumped’ down. Back then it wasn’t like that :). And the blogger ‘navbar’ on top of the page too… for some reason it appears abit messy in the archived pages.
Have a fantastic weekend!

Happy Belated Birthday! ;)
Wow, you sure can write! And design too! I love both the headers and designs in your old blog.
As for the job hunting, I wish you all the best!
Have a Super Sunday! :)
Thank you, Raymond. No, not too late - it was just less than 6 days ago… ;D
Cincau, I think guy-guy writing sounds abit “wrong” rite? Remember Weirdster? Hehe. I relate better when talking to women……
Thanks, Jason. Haha, sorry bout that shock. I was also shocked that I actually had the nerve to do that abruptly… heheheh…
Angel - Ah, here, it’s never too late! Big riteee the TV!!! Hahaha! The room also. Really comfortable ;)
CC hor, stands for ‘Competent Communicator’. It sounds abit ’sissy’ so everybody always accelerates away from the title by doing 2 more (advanced) speeches. Then a new, different title will be awarded.
Got termination fee one lehh. Cos our contract was for 12-months. Now we haven’t finished the contract ma. (Btw - since you Aloha-ed me - I was greeted ‘Aloha’ at the gym too because they recently got this Hawaiian theme - abit crappy though :p)
Err.. never heard of Big Blue Marble (dem, what a troubled childhood I had ;p Missing out on the interesting things) hehehe……
Thank you, day-dreamer! I wanted to do a similar ‘festive-theme’ here for Narrowband.org but got too lazy haha.
Thank you for dropping by, everyone! On a Sunday, at that!! :D
Happy ??th birthday & 6th days anniversary !
All the best for your job hunting.
Remember a cheerful loser is a winner .
Good Luck !
hey, don’t give up on finding job. I know it’s very devastating to go all the interviews and to know the result. But i am sure you will get something that you wish in the end. :) I had a hard 6 months of going through all this shit.
Happy weekend, narrowband! Hope you get to find a better job than the screwed-up one. Your old blog was pretty cool too, but I like the current one better. *wink*
Happy belated birthday and good luck with your job hunt.
Happy belated birthday!:P
Thanks, Linken. I’m 23. Hehehe..
Xin - 6 months huh? Yeah perseverance will pay off, I know :)
Rinnah - Current one nice meh? Abit boring also la.. no cartoons.. ;p Some friends even complained that there’re too many words! *pengsan*
Thank you Adam and Charng, I feel so grown-up now :p
Happy Belated Birthday. :D
Good luck in your job hunting adventure.
Like Rinnah, I like your current blog better although the old one is good too.
Happy Belated Birthday… sorry that I’m late…
Well, having a pen pal friend is great, I miss the time…
Btw, I lov reading too!
i’m here .. i’m here .. yaye!!! *happy monday*
Thanks, Che-cheh. It’s very adventurous indeed… dunno what’s gonna happen the next time you enter their HQ.
Thank you, TA. Having a ‘pen pal’ is like another channel to vent and rant (esp stuff that I don’t wanna put on my blog), so yeah it’s great indeed!
Welcome, Cutiepie! :D Happy Monday? But it had been wet almost the whole day… Grey skies don’t make me happy :(. (But chocolate does :D I’m gonna grab a bar of Dairy Milk later!)
Thanx for your comment in my blog. :) Yeah public apologizing is the only thing i can do. :)
You’re welcome Cedric. Thank you for dropping by!
Happy belated 23rd birthday! Wah! So young!
Wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Cheer up, one door closes, another will open. :)
waadoi…..HR always makes mistakes. I remember applying for a technical department in 1 company and ended up getting interviewed for a totally non-technical, almost no requirement of a degree punya job. hope that makes u feel better :p
good luck with the mandrin and gym..
Sorry it’s late, but happy birthday and all that, from Essex.
Goodness, did i forget to wish u? I think i really forgotten.. anyway, u know it.. wishing now is like kinda meaningless and u gotta hit me back with a dull thanks or kinda “forceful” response? so i’m not gonna belate u or bla those kinda thing.. wishing u the very well in the job hunt, readings, and surely, pumping those muscles.. just make sure u dun pump till too big, and sag it.. haha..:)
Thank you, ECL :)
Thanks, Alicia. I’m applying for both tech and non-tech positions and see which opportunity comes first. In any case, I always look for one that requires at least a bachelor’s deg. in eng..
Thanks, Steve!
It’s ok Jian, you und I und, can lar. No I don’t do “forceful” (whatever that means) response on my blog! My muscles have grown by at least 1mm after tonight’s workout I think. They feel tight. Haha…
“”"Thank you, TA. Having a ‘pen pal’ is like another channel to vent and rant (esp stuff that I don’t wanna put on my blog), so yeah it’s great indeed!”"”
Yeah, I agree with you!
