Super-long Giant Receipt

Recently, Giant launched some contest that promises more than RM130,000 worth of prizes. Holiday packages, actually.

And the ‘contest form’ was actually your shopping receipt itself. There is also a questionnaire, in the same receipt, that’s supposed to help them to improve their customer service.

Obviously, the result is a super-long receipt. The printing of the receipt took so much time that I won’t be surprised if a customer prefers not to wait for it.

Another consequence is that the roll of receipt paper needs to be replaced more frequently. The papers run out so fast, you see. Customers are made to wait through the changing process as well (which takes about 3-4 minutes).

The contest sounds interesting but surely there must be a better way to organize it. Throwing everything into the receipt has more drawbacks than advantages, I’d say. We’re wasting a lot paper, ink and time.

Even if you buy only a handful of items, your receipt could be more than half a meter long. In the pictures above, I’ve measured my receipt to be 1.1 meters long. And no, we’re not interested to join the contest or answer the questionnaire.

Thankfully the contest will end on the 4th of July, and the questionnaire 31st of August. But a lot of time and paper will have been wasted by then.

  2. Haha! I went shopping with my mom few days back and she had to choose that day to do her monthly grocery shopping. We bought a whole trolley of groceries and my receipt was probably close to 2 meters.

  6. Waaaaa… that’s a pretty long receipt!! Add another half of it to its end and it’s more than my height already… =.=!!

What did you buy, honestly? :P

I really hate it when you buy a few of the same merchandise and they waste the time to scan every single item instead of typing the number of items on the machine and scan only once so that the computer can do the multiplying. It saves time and paper, too.

  7. Yet another classic example of Boleh-land ingenuity! *shakes head*

But like angel said, why waste? Enter the contest la… if only to make the sacrifice of the trees who died to produce that roll of paper worthwhile… *grin*

  8. Angel – Actually it was just like every other week – we didn’t buy exceptionally large amount of items or anything. Many other families buy more! It’s the contest form (and the questionnaire) that lengthens the whole receipt!

Belle – If you shopped at Giant USJ1 I think your receipt could’ve been much, much longer! No thanks to the ‘extra’ forms at the bottom of the receipt.

Che-cheh – I know you are Tesco supporter ;p But Giant near my house ma, haha. Besides, we’ve been doing our grocery shopping at Giant for many years now.

Stupe – And the Environmental Week (in conjunction with World Green/Environment Day) had just passed. How ironic.

Jian – Yeah I was really surprised to bump into Nic last night, just outside locker room. I’m not a god fitness ‘role model’, you are! Hahaha!

Day-dreamer – The usual lor, groceries! Oh the cashiers at Giant do multiply wan, so it’s not so much an issue. Anyway, scanning each item one-by-one doesn’t beat waiting for the roll of receipt paper to be replaced. We had to stand and watch, and couldn’t leave because the cashier hadn’t begun punching in our stuff.

Rinnah – The contest ar… Then mah means we’re ‘supporting’ the cause liao? :p I dowan to support! There must be a better way to organize contests. I think they were trying attract shoppers’ attention lar, by putting it together in one receipt. But the printing is very poor knoe, the ink like fading leh, hard to read also.

  9. yes, i got that length of receipt too last week at Giant when I bought less than five items! As if the queues are not slow enough, we now have to wait for the printing of the long receipts as well.

  10. can use as toilet paper liao so long!

  11. gee… who in the world came up with such idea? truly a waste of money. and there’s no value added in making your customers wait for 3 extra minutes just for the receipt.

  15. Bkworm – Exactly. Five items also the receipt very long already. What a waste! We were made to wait through the changing process too. And the cashier took all the time in the world.

Wuching – Cannot lar. I too used to soft ones. This one will pain pain. Besides, it can’t wipe away anything :p

Zewt – More disadvantages than advantages, I’d say. In fact, I can’t see the advantages at all.

Pinksterz – Adoi, apa shopaholic pulak. This is grocery shopping leh, different league ;p

Thanks for scratching, Freethinker. Angel will be very happy!

Paddy – Hmm, not sure how we can use A4 as receipts (or if there was any machine that prints A4-sized receipts). ;)

Conclusion is, long receipt == waste time and money!

  16. A4 for the questionnaire :)

    Comment by Paddy Tan — June 21, 2007 #

  17. Ohh! Oops, sorry! Yes, A4/5 should do it!
