My All-Time Favorite Instrumental Piece

I listen to all kinds of music, but acoustic, live, or instrumental tracks are my favorite. I like the ‘rawness’ of the music - purely composed of acoustic sounds without any kind of sound engineering (except maybe amplification). I guess you can call me a minimalist. Remember I mentioned about a rare track I kept in my dead harddisk? Fortunately, I have a copy of it in my phone. Some of you may have heard it before when I put it up on my old blog years ago. Let me share it here with you now, my all-time favorite instrumental piece:

I can loop the song an infinite number of times and still won’t get sick of it. I wish I could play like that :(. I don’t know who the pianist is, though. It’s actually based on an original song, sung by Utada Hikaru. It’s called Final Distance, if I’m not mistaken. The CD (from which this song was supposedly taken) had only 3 tracks, all instrumental piano pieces (including Can You Keep a Secret - but I don’t have that song anymore). It’s no use trying to search for the piano score - I’ve had people asking me where to find it (one even offered me $$!).

I can’t even find the CD online. Anyway, tell me you love it :)

Announcing the Demise of my Harddisk

Yes, the drive has journeyed on to the Land Where Consumer Electronics Are Eternally Blessed. But it’s not the end of the world. Surprisingly, I’m not *that* upset about it. I mean, I have back ups of the really important stuff - like photos. Documents… I can’t think of any important documents that I’ve lost. I have back ups of my lecture notes and slides throughout my years in university though - if you consider that important.

That’s my harddisk, being treated under Intensive Care Unit. It didn’t make past the critical stage. It showed some positive signs, after more than 15 minutes plugged into another laptop - signs that say the drive was successfully detected. However, efforts to access it were futile. The clacking noise made was pretty loud. I could actually feel something knocking against its casing when I held the drive in my hands. Something mechanical has apparently gone terribly wrong. I’m in the process of getting a new hdd. Meanwhile, I’ll be using another laptop at home - which has become somewhat like a ‘common laptop’ in the family hall. It’s much newer than mine, and has better specs so it’s not that bad.

By the way, Google Reader rawks. I just love the interface. Remember I was talking about my feed management in Feedreader? Well, the downside is that it’s offline. Therefore, it’s gone together with my dead harddisk. I’ve since been using Google Reader. I guess keeping things online does have its advantages. In fact, a number of my installer (setup) files have previously been uploaded onto my server too. As for mp3s… ahh… they were my prized collection. But then again, I hardly listened to all of them, only a select few. And guess what, I have my favorite tracks in my phone already (especially one super rare track). Thank goodness.

I don’t like Mondays. Especially when it rains. But I like Monday nights - because it’s my workout night. Heading to the gym now, adios!

Here’s a community service reminder: BACK UP YOUR HARDDISK TODAY! Or, at least your important files. Failing to do so may cause severe depression. Be very afraid.

My Harddisk’s Time is Almost Up

I can safely say that there’s probably a 50-50 chance of successful data recovery. From what I gather (Internet as well as friends), the harddisk is dying and I’ve to get the data out ASAP. Luckily, I’ve done one round of backing-up about a month ago - where a large portion of my jpeg files was burnt into DVD-Rs. So the ‘data loss’ this time around (touchwood) is not that critical, I guess. That said, there are still files and folders that I’d want to keep (which I’ve not backed up), so I hope I’ll still be able to recover them. Last night’s Windows Automatic Update was real, after all - It’s got nothing to do with the harddisk failure.

I’ve just removed the harddisk from my notebook, and I plan to use an IDE-USB interfacing cable to access the harddisk, using another computer. By the way, I am currently using Sis’ desktop. Last night’s entry was published using my phone - the phone that many people consider a close contender of the iPhone (although you shouldn’t really compare the two side-by-side).

I decided that I won’t do that again (tapping on the numeric keypad, manually inserting symbols in tags such as <img src=”Picture URL”… />), because it’s not at all a fun thing to do! The photo taken was resized using the phone’s installed software. Anyway, let’s go back to my laptop. Right now, the harddisk is sitting on my laptop, (almost, maybe) lifelessly. Tonight, after hooking it up with another PC, I’ll try to salvage whatever I can. It’s strange because according to Bernard, Hitachi drives are considered to be reliable. I’ve not dropped my laptop or anything.

He added that once there are strange noises heard from the harddisk, it’s unlikely that data can still be recovered from it. Anyway, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’ll be sending Mom & Co. to Bukit Jalil stadium for Emil Chou’s concert before proceeding to kautim my harddisk. I can also forget about checking out this year’s Bon Odori Festival - Sis and I planned to go and have a look-see actually. Now no mood lah. This whole misfortune started last night - and I couldn’t think of a better reason than it being Friday the 13th!

Malware Infection: My Windows is Dead

[Update@14th July, 1500hrs: Apparently, it was not a software problem - neither was it due to a malware (malicious software - a common term for worms/viruses). It’s actually a hardware problem - my harddisk is failing! More about it in my next post.] Earlier this evening, just before I wrote my previous entry, my PC was running very slowly even though I didn’t fire up any processes. My ZoneAlarm prompted me that some program pertaining to Microsoft’s genuine check was trying to access the Internet. I denied the connection, but somehow, about 20 mins later, I saw something strange when I opened my Task Manager to see why my PC was still lagging terribly. I saw a running process named something like MTD.exe, if I’m not mistaken (can’t really remember). All caps, with three letters, and starts with an M, of that I’m sure. Quickly, I ended that process.

However, moments later, I was prompted a dialogue that says my Windows had just finished downloading and installing some updates - much like how the real Microsoft Windows Update works. It says I must restart my PC, and gave me a choice of either to restart immediately, or wait til the progress bar finishes loading. At that time, I didn’t think much about whatever happened, because it really seemed like a real, ordinary update. I restarted my PC, and everything was fine until I returned from the gym. My PC crashed, and the harddisk area (just below the keyboard, to the left of the touchpad) was emitting some loud clacking noise I’ve never heard before. I knew that something was terribly wrong. I tried to bring up the Task Manager but even that couldn’t come on. I then force-shut down my PC.

And walla, I can’t boot into Windows because it says some file is missing. I can’t even boot into Safe Mode. The furthest I can go is the BIOS menu area. I tried again and my PC says ‘Primary hard disk drive 0 failure’. Below it, there was ‘No boot device available’. Basically, I think I’m screwed.

I snapped the pic with my phone, and wrote this entire entry using the same phone. No, no QWERTY keyboard, just a numeric keypad. My thumb hurts real bad now. I’ll try to use the linux-based Knoppix to access my files and back up the important ones. Looks like a reinstallation of Windows will be inevitable…

Damn it. I’ve never been infected with a malware/virus/worm this badly! I thought I had sufficient protection. Sigh! There goes my happy weekend.

On my Teeth (Again), and my Drafts

*Chews chews chews…* I’m having green apples as my dessert. Y’know, I feel some kinda strange discomfort when I chew into them. Seriously, I wonder if anyone feels the same. It’s like my teeth are too sensitive for these apples - I feel as though the apples are of a different pH level. Each time I take a bite, I feel a strange ‘tingling’ sensation - something like when you land your teeth into ice-creams.

It can’t be the gums - because the discomfort comes from the teeth themselves, not the gum. I’m surprised that my teeth have senses. The only set of nerves I know is inside a layer called enamel (as a matter of fact, there’s another layer inside - google it). Anyway… so, yeah, sensitive mouth. I get a strange kick out of kissing. Haha. Naw I’m just kidding. Must be the hard-brushing I mentioned. I’ve since softened my brushing strength though.

I’m going out in a while - to the gym. Told you I’ve been going quite regularly now. Besides, that was one of my short-term goals. I’m trying to fix Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to be my ‘gym days’. On other weekdays, it’s either I go to the toastmasters meeting, or take a rest (read: chatting). At work, so far so good - there’s nothing much to tell you also except to say that I’m happy with everything!

Don’t think I’m gonna disclose much about my workplace or colleagues (trying to be a careful blogger - blogging too much about work isn’t the smartest thing to do ;p). I was drafting an entry (to be honest, I have more than 5 drafts!) for the past few days, but I don’t think it’ll get published. Have you encountered this before? You write halfway (sometimes even completed the whole thing), and then you decide that it won’t go online. Happens to me all the time ;).

Happy Friday the 13th! Hopefully more updates over the course of the weekend.

Toastmasters and the TLI

Today was supposed to be some kinda special day, I heard. The reason is simply because the date, written in ddmmyy format gives 070707 - a nice ‘combination’. Although it may not be significant enough to declare a public holiday, many couples have chosen to make the seventh of July their wedding anniversary. Personally, I’m one of the thousands who’re not too bothered. Today has been as ordinary as any given Saturday; except that there were more bridal cars seen on the road than most other days. I saw two wedding processions while I was on my way to the Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) Training this afternoon. Let me share with you what role the TLI plays in the Toastmasters movement.

Toastmasters and the TLI | Narrowband.orgEvery year, there are two TLI trainings specially conducted for Club Officers - or executive committee (exco) members - of all Toastmasters Clubs in District 51. FYI, District 51 covers three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. This year, the theme for our District has been chosen to be “Shaping Our Aspirations and Results”, or S.O.A.R. for short. To gauge the performance and success of each club, we have something called the Distinguished Club Program (DCP). In this program, each club is challenged to achieve 10 DCP points in a term - where each point awarded corresponds to one type of achievement. For example, if a club has two members attaining the Competent Communicator (CC) award, that club earns 1 DCP point. Exco members play an important role, where the entire club’s direction, environment and success lie in their hands. This is where the TLI comes into picture. It is meant to train and equip the exco members with the skills and knowledge required to steer their clubs to greater success.

Each club has to send at least four exco members (usually comprise of the President, VP Education, VP Membership, VP Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant-at-Arms) to both the TLI sessions in order to earn 1 DCP point. So, what’s the deal with the DCP points anyway? They’re actually a form of recognition. If a club earns 9 or 10 DCP points in a term, it will be awarded the President’s Distinguished Club status. Similarly, if a club earns 7 or 8 DCP points, it will be known as a Select Distinguished Club, and so on. Upon receiving these awards, ribbons - which can be hung together with the club’s banner - will be given. It’s a big thing (figuratively speaking), actually. We always try to work towards scoring as many points as possible. In doing so, not only will the members benefit, the club, too will be known as a well-established, well-led and successful club.

I attended the TLI training today as a VP Membership (VPM). I’m a ‘recycled’ VPM of my club - that means I was holding the same position in the previous term. My training session was conducted by Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Azmi Shahrin, who himself is a great speaker. A VPM’s role is to spread awareness, draw members, and retain them, of course. It’s very tricky to recruit new members, and the VPM needs a lot of help from the rest of the exco in this regard. For every 4 new members absorbed into a club, 1 DCP point will be awarded to that club. In other words, the DCP is a measure of how successful a club is, which in turn reflects how successful its members are. Successful members are members who have benefited from the Toastmasters program, whether in terms of communication, public-speaking or leadership skills. The TLI today was the third for me in two years, and the best part of the event was of course meeting our counterparts from other clubs.

Some Background
Toastmasters is a non-profit, international public-speaking organization that provides a platform for everyone (above 18, that is) to self-develop, and to improve their communication and leadership skills. It also provides networking opportunity where you get to meet a lot of people from all over the place (you could visit any club in the world once you’re a Toastmaster). Want to know how many clubs there are in your neighborhood? Begin searching here! Send them an email and say you’re interested to drop by. They will be more than happy to receive you.

P/s: Most of Narrowband.org readers have never heard of the Toastmasters, actually. Therefore I hope this entry has been informative! :)

Rinnah’s Tag

I’m still drafting a new entry. Meanwhile, Rinnah spread her love to me last night. Oh no wait, that doesn’t sound right. Link love, kay? Link love. Now, to avoid building up a huge backlog (of undone tags), I feel compelled to respond to it now.

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them an extra link back.

2. Copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog then change it when you do your post and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword.

3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.

4. Add at least 1 new blog that you KNOW is using the DO FOLLOW plugin to the list in the “My Adds” section. (Add no more than 5!) Let the people you’ve added know, so that they can keep the list going!

A Little Bit More Update

After punching (more like… beeping) out of my workplace yesterday, I went back home to rest for a while (and wrote a short blog entry) before heading to the gym. I was a little sleepy but after working out, I felt good. I slept very well last night! To be frank, I didn’t think I’d sit in front of the computer and write an entry today because I told myself I wanted to do something else. Like watching the TV (or some DVDs I borrowed - there’re 3 more I haven’t watched) or something. Alas, I succumbed to the blogging temptation, hence this entry. (Of course, also thanks to your encouragements… :p)

So what happened yesterday? I shook hands with everyone in the building - there were at least a hundred people altogether. Apparently that’s what happens in the company; every newcomer will be paraded introduced to all the employees on both floors, including the top management staff. The induction programme ended today with a briefing on quality assurance and the company’s efforts in keeping to the ISO standards. During my free time, I read. No kidding. I don’t think I’ll even finish that book by this week. The book provides technical and operating info about a certain system that the company does. Then it occurred to me that that’s what most newcomers in technical positions do - read. LW has been doing a lot of reading too in her company since she started working.

My seniors are really nice and friendly. I’ve been having lunch with the same people who interviewed me - the seniors (including the head) in my department. Luckily I didn’t bullshit my way through the interview. Don’t be surprised, some people do go the ‘extra mile’ to make them sound more ‘competent’ during interviews - especially if they know that the interviewer is from the HR department. I realized that in terms of communication and language, I fit in well too. Everyone quickly switched to Canto during lunch, albeit with some English thrown in. I’m also amazed by one particular senior, who is a Japanese. His conversations with our Japanese counterparts (on telephone, in Nihongo) have always been very loud, but interesting.

I look forward to joining the company’s sports and recreational club, where apparently there’re lotsa active members who play badminton. The company pays for the courts. There’s also an annual dinner coming up, during which outstanding employees will be given awards, and every department will have to come up with a stage performance. I heard that the new staff are always the popular ‘victims’. I hope that that’s not true. And company trips? I was told that there’ll be one, but the place hasn’t been confirmed. All these, plus the fact that we’ll be shifting to a new building early next year (where we’ll be joined by our affiliate company currently based in Shah Alam), have been a great source of excitement. Of course, I also can’t wait to get my hands dirty working on the real stuff (projects currently ongoing).

Despite spending most of my time reading, I’ve had good time chatting and laughing with my colleagues. The HR lady once told me that this company is a place where everyone works as a team, and that our performance - whether good or bad - will be obvious for all to see, especially the boss. That’s actually a very good thing. Transparency. I’ve seen the flowchart on how the company handles a project - almost all the departments have a role to play. On a smaller scale, we have meetings among ourselves every morning - something not uncommon in all ISO9001-compliant companies, I understand. I was amazed at how friendly everyone is to each other regardless of their departments, ethnicity and seniority. Having met (during the newcomer-introduction ‘parade’) almost everyone, I found myself smiling and acknowledging my colleagues even when I take a short walk to the washroom.

Although I don’t know how long will such practice last, I can safely say I feel right at home with these people. Okay now enough with my ramblings about my new workplace.

I got lost while trying to use a shortcut to avoid paying a toll this morning. Somehow I just felt a little adventurous la, can or not? Luckily I still managed to arrive on time. Actually I wanted to try this popular route that everyone uses to bypass that toll - and Google Earth has not been helpful enough to update its maps. By the way, I met a fellow coursemate during lunch today. We were never close, and I don’t even know her name. There was a brief eye-contact which was electrifying and it was nice to recognize an acquaintance from university. She is probably working in a nearby company. After work today I had dinner with LW and EJ, where we caught up on things and stuff going on in our workplaces - which was really nice.

Ok, I didn’t expect to write this much this time around. But then I guess my fingers somehow had their way with the keyboard. Oh by the by… halfway through this entry, I unplugged my AC adapter and went to the toilet, where I unloaded some ‘files’ off my A:\ drive and continued typing. No prize for guessing what ‘A’ stands for. If you must know, no, I didn’t dirty or wet my computer.

How’s that for a little bit more update? *Yawns…*

A Little Update

Wow, as much as I love to write about my first day experience, I don’t think I have the time and brainpower to do it. Suffice to say, I’ve no regrets landing myself this job! System Engineer, that’s what I am and what I’ll be, for quite a while. Anyway, here’s something I found in The Star newspaper last week:

Filler #1 | Narrowband.org

I didn’t know a cunning linguist is also known as a copywriter. All I know that it’s a little too suggestive to be in national newspaper. It was catchy, though. And oh…

Filler #1 | Narrowband.org

Go watch Transformers, ok? Don’t mind the corny lines (I didn’t notice until angel mentioned!), and you’ll enjoy the movie every single frame. I don’t mind going to watch it again, and again. Ok, thrice is enough.

Have a great week, guys. Don’t mind the slower updates yea… Work is gonna take up most of my time now. (I really need to learn from those who manage to juggle between blogging and working…)
