VMY2007: Malaysia International Fireworks Competition
I was in Putrajaya for Day 1 of the Malaysia International Fireworks Competition. Our home team, Team Malaysia had the privilege to kick-start this 9-day event. I arrived at about 9:40pm, just in time to find a good spot and set up my camera. Here are some photos that I managed to take:

That was taken in the beginning of the show, when the sky was still clear of smoke. I love the clean background, and the mixture of colours!
There was actually huge building still under construction nearby, so I had to be careful not to shoot it as well.
That’s what happens when the sky becomes smoky. Nevertheless, the fireworks still looked beautiful.
How about some golden shower? Note that tower crane at the top-left of the photo? It appears in all my photos! Grr.
Here’s an electrifying display of light…
This one actually has two colours… it turns purple before disappearing into darkness.
I like this shot, but not the arrangement. If only they were more evenly spread across the photo…

Very fine, nice explosions. Again, it’d be much better if they were more uniformed. Anyway, my main purpose there was to shoot fireworks photos. It was my first time using the Panasonic Lumix FZ7 to shoot fireworks! Overall, I think the opening display was only so-so. I had expected it to be much more spectacular. Or maybe because the actual competition hadn’t started yet. Oh well, I enjoyed playing with my camera anyway.
Hopefully the displays will get better as the competition progresses!
P/s: OMG the traffic jam on the way back was B.A.D!

Duh. The traffic was BAD indeed. See, at least you managed to shoot some awesome pics of fireworks. But me - had been sitting in car for one bloody hour and been driving in the massive traffic jam. It’s sucks. Oh well. :P

Angel - Actually hor, this camera is not even near the size of a regular DSLR. And it’s not as pricey too. Anyway, this camera belongs to my uncle. He left it here last week so I curi-curi go use :p

The spot with the best view - you gotta pay RM38.50 :p Other than that, have to pandai-pandai liao… as long as no immediate obstruction nearby, park somewhere, get out of your car and set up your tripod there :p
I would say it’s worth the travel - well, once at least ;)

Chiaw Yin - The best spot is the non-FOC spot, hehe. But then I saw a few blogs with very nice photos, which include a lot of lights (from surrounding buildings) and awesome reflection on the lake. Try searching in Technorati. My spot was on a low, flat area.
Emily - Ohh you should’ve gone earlier :p When I was on my way there, the traffic was surprisingly good. Heavy traffic, but at least the cars were still moving. I slowly inched my way in, no problem at all. But then coming out that time was hell!

Pretty fireworks! I wanted to go, but no kaki to go with and cannot go alone. *sulks* Some more this weekend gonna be so busy, sure cannot go also. Will try to go on the last weekend - Merdeka Day weekend. Hopefully not so many people around then!

Jason - I went alone too :(. I also makan all the cost myself - including petrol and 4 tolls (to-and-fro). More than an hour jam on the way back OMG!

Giddy Tiger - Thanks! Actually, there’s a schedule on the MIFC official website. Only one team performs in one day… If I’m not mistaken. Anyway, for most of us, it doesn’t matter who’s the team, as long as there’s fireworks (pun unintended)!
Darling Hui - Aiyo… I thought ah xxxn will know what to do… :p Actually the first day nothing really, reall spectacular. Many people say that the Japanese team’s performance will be worth watching so perhaps you can wait for that one. And also the last and final day - don’t miss that :p
The photos, well, I gotta say it’d been much better if I had a good shooting angle. In these photos there’re no symmetry at all, and I was on a really low, flat land. I hope to capture better pics in future!

Che-cheh - YA! Definitely plenty of room for improvement. I’ve already seen a few super nice ones while I was surfing the internet - Some of them had really good exposure and angle. They gave me ideas on how to improve dy! :D Oh oh, you *cannot* miss the last day… Hehehe…
Fay Lin - How can you compare with videos ne… I think you better go masuk Flickr and search ‘putrajaya mifc’ or ‘putrajaya fireworks’. Lagi banyak good pictures. As a n00b photographer, I also get to learn from viewing those professional shots!
Rinnah - I tell you, I went alone leh :(. Nobody wanted to go with me. Susah betul wanna find kaki. OooHhH! This weekend, big day eh? *winks* Yaaa, I think the Merdeka night also sure super geng wan! Not many people? I hope you’re right… but I doubt it… I took about one hour to reach home that day!
Jimmy - Thanks :). I’d recommend you to surf in Flickr. Search with keywords like ‘putrajaya fireworks’ or something. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. Ah, won’t be romantic if there’re kids running around making noise. There’re lotsa people, you see!

But the toll and petrol from Malacca to Putrajaya really wallet blowing, compared to Subang to Putrajaya. But hey, I am coming up tomorrow for something. Haha!

I took some pictures too.. BUT my photos look lousy if compare with yours.. Actually quite hard to estimate the fireworks “fired” positions and time… My friends raised up “white flag” and took a video clip on that.. =P

Deng - It doesn’t really kick-ass, but does perform decent enough. Shutter speed ranged from 5 to 10 seconds, for various pics. No particular reason, just random (n00b ma). The camera can go up to 60 seconds max.
Eunice - Well then, make it a point to go and catch it live, some time next week! Get your family members, housemates, coursemates, blogging mates, to go with you!
Jason - Yes I think if I were you, I wouldn’t travel so many hundreds of kilometers just for this 15-20 minutes show… Unless I’m making a living out of taking photos :).
Victor - I managed to watch from halfway, haha. Was late, damn it. Oh well, it was better than nothing. I was in Cyberjaya, after the Cyberview Lodge there. I love the final minute, where there were so many bright, different colours.
Keeyit - Eh, it was my first time taking fireworks pics so seriously too. I used to take fireworks pics without any tripod and they were only so-so. I agree that it’s hard to estimate the timing, and I really salute those pros who manage to capture beautiful shots at just the right time!
