Jacky Cheung World Tour 2007: Kuala Lumpur
In what may be his final world concert tour, Jacky Cheung put up a superb performance at the national stadium in Bukit Jalil last night. We were initially worried that he might not be able to perform because he canceled two concerts recently due to a bout of flu. As it turned out, he not only recovered in time, but also pumped in 110% into the 3-hour-plus concert.

This photo was snapped using my phone, and it’s probably the only clear photo taken during the concert as I didn’t bring along my camera. We were not supposed to bring one, anyway! One of the best features in the concert was the computer graphics displayed on the giant screen, as part of the stage’s backdrop. The picture was very clear and crisp, with occasional animations which blended very effectively with the music.
Jacky Cheung gave a short introduction about his musical career and guess what, he’s been singing for as long as I live - 23 years. He’s 46 now, but his voice never seemed to have aged at all. He talked about his musical journey, the tragic year of 2003 in Hong Kong showbiz, and his family. He’s married with two daughters, and he has composed and written songs for his wife and daughters, which I thought was schweeet!!
He then sang the songs he wrote for his wife, gong nei ji (讲妳知 (Cantonese) - Let You Know) and daughter, zai ni shen bian (在你身边 - By Your Side). Personally, I like his slower songs because his vocals can be better appreciated - there’s something magical about his voice that I think is what makes him the best singer among the sei dai tin wong (四大天王 - 4 Heavenly Kings).
He also made reference to us Malaysians, saying that we know Cantonese as good as Mandarin, which was received with a loud cheer from all in the stadium. Indeed, we’re very fortunate in that sense, I think. One of his best Cantonese songs was mui tin ngoi nei doh yat seh (每天爱你多一些 - Loving you more each day), and obviously, the fans loved it. The whole stadium sang along! After that, he sang another super-hit, wen bie (吻别 - Kiss goodbye), which was in Mandarin.
Many non-Chinese speakers may have heard wen bie sung in English lyrics, by Michael Learns to Rock (titled Take me to your heart) in recent years. That’s because MLTR re-made the song and changed it to English. In the concert, Jacky also threw in a small part of his hit classical musical xue lang hu (雪狼湖 - Snow, wolf and lake), as well as ru guo ai (如果爱 - Perhaps love). He danced, acted and sang during the play - no wonder his face was soaked in sweat. At one point he even wore - albeit briefly - a thick fur coat. *Tabik*
Among other songs he sang include ji siong yat sang gan nei jau (只想一生跟你走 - I will follow you), yuet bun wan (月半弯 - Half-moon), wo zhen de shou shang le (我真的受伤了 - I’m really hurt), ta lai ting wo de yan chang hui (她来听我的演唱会 - She was at my concert), lei hoi yi hau (离开以后 - After leaving), xin ru dao ge (心如刀割 - Heart pierced by a knife) and a very emotional last-song of the night, zhu fu (祝福 - Well wishes). He also sang songs belonging to other singers, like tian hei hei (天黑黑 - Dark sky), by Sun Yanzi and ai ru chao shui (爱如潮水 - Love like a tide), by Jeff Chang.
Edit@16 Sept, 0115hrs: I actually kinda like what the camera crew was doing, capturing live images of the audience, and project them onto 5 large screens (including the one as the stage’s backdrop) around the stadium. At one point, the cameras began zooming in on couples. Most of them didn’t realize they were on screen until the audience cheered. One of the couples (actually, the man appeared much older; they could well have been father-and-daughter… I couldn’t really tell. No offence to them though, whatever their relationship!) even took advantage of the limelight - the man gave the woman a peck on her cheek! Very apt!
It is worth mentioning that the concert had impressive fireworks as well. No wonder they had to hold the concert outdoors. By the way, it also rained for a while. Jacky actually said that if the rain continued, he would join the fans and get soaked in the rain himself. Well, he was already soaked in sweat, the rain wouldn’t have made much of a difference! Another thing I noticed was, renowned Malaysian violinist Joanne Yeoh was also part of Jacky’s musical band in his world tour concerts. Yeah, suddenly feel abit proud ;).
In a nutshell, I enjoyed the concert… lots and lots! It was worth every penny!
P/s: Btw many people actually walked out when he bade farewell - which was part of an act (he had already mentioned that there would be an encore). The audience started to come back in again after Jacky resumed singing. Kinda funny to see, really… they got punk’d lol.

Sounds like someone had a good time! I love Jacky Cheung songs… but being banana, I don’t know the song titles, just know them all by heart when I hear ‘em. Hehehe.
Ahhh brings back so much memory…his songs are lovely. I agree man..among the sei tai tin wong, he’s the best.
I’ve been to his concert once, I think a decade ago. Before the snow.wolf.lake era.
Tabik him! I EVER he hold another concert I will certainly go.
i seen him before but i dont know his voice or his songs :)
a great and superb concert he has made!!
Seems like F4, S.H.E. and Jay Chou didn’t fully occupied the mind of audience nowadays. Once the best will always the best.
Hi narrowband,
You are a pro in music and concerts… :-) Thanks for visiting my runnning weblog.
I cannot sing Jacky Cheung’s songs but I like to listen to his wonderfully melodic and tuneful songs.
Will put a link in my weblog to your website.
regards,
KC :-)
Hi Narrowband,
i agree with every single word you describe about Jacky Cheung’s concert. It was really a SUPER GREAT show i have ever seen. I was kind of regret as i didn’t go for his last concert (雪狼湖 - Snow, wolf and lake). Luckily this time he ‘made’ it happened again… the combination of the “雪狼湖” & “如果爱 - Perhaps love”, it is just so fantastic! i really don’t think so far there is anyone can replace his position. Not only because of his good voice, but his character and behaviour.
Oh geez. His songs are the classic songs ever! Too bad I’ve missed it. :( His songs were once on my top-list during karaoke sessions. *and I have not been to qiong k for like…ages. lol.*
Great post with lotsa details. :D
Great cover of the concert! Wish I was there too man, haha
Great post! Very detail, i fell like i’m still in the concert while reading ur post… The concert was superb!!
I went to the show too.
However, I thought he has not fully recovered yet… it was still not his tip top condition.. I believe if he is fully well, he can do much better than this.
Just 1 thing for the produciton crew… i totally think Bukit Jalil is not a good venue to hold the concert.. it is simply too wide. The feedback was horrible and the cheers and the spirit of the crowd was somehow unable to “unify” due to the scare of spaces here and there.
Look at Hong Kong, they only accomodate to ~15000 audience, but with the excellent sound quality and venue they have, it was always excited to watch concert over there.
I understand Galaxy tried to accomodate as many people as possible in 1 show to cut the cost and have higher profit.. but it some how sacrifice the satisfaction of the audience not to mention distort the vocal quality and impact of the singer, especially singler like Jacky.
Err.. did he sing “I can’t forget you?”.. :p
ahaha.. the traffic after the concert was CRAZY tho. some dude parked riiight AT the exit. How smart is that?? Lol..
u a serious fan of Jacky Cheung :) ? If he looks like me but sings like him, nobody would bother to go see his concert :)
wah liao… u jot down all the songs he sang ah? :P
we enjoyed it too! tho’ not the traffic after the concert -_-”’ u said u park very far? where? astro? :P
psstt… kenny ng also can sing like jacky oh… heh heh… ;)
吻别
如果爱
祝福
Sumua nie, aku suker ;)
I know him because of his 金曲 and he is one of the 四大天王. And we like to sing his songs at KTV… He is really cantenese pop 歌神! Agree ya :)
i wish i’d gone! sigh. zaman rancangan penyekatan..bohpien..
Nice picture too, even with your phone!…of course la, N95 ma…
aww jacky! i wanted to go but.. sigh, money problems again haha.
and thanks to your post i can get at least some idea what it was inside :)
jacky really rocks… he is one of the best singers in hk music industry, i mean the one that really had great vocals compared to the younger generation singers. most of them can’t really sing. sigh.
Rinnah - Hey I’m a bannee too but whutteheck, it’s all good. I’ve picked up Mandarin over the years at home and with friends, and music is one of the channels to help improve as well.
Che-cheh - Wait! You went to the concert 10 years ago (omg I just hit puberty)? Ahh! The same one that Angel went!!! Why la you missed this one? Hope he will stage another one… although rumours may not be supporting this possibility…
Bengbeng - I’m sure you know some of his songs, but don’t know it’s actually him singing ;)
Chooipeng - Indeed, indeed!
Vhanded - F4? Hmmm… :p Oh well, yes… if you’re good, you’re good and your music will be around for a long time.
KC & gang - Hey thanks for the compliments, although I must say I am just an observer… ;D You wrote pretty comprehensively about the concert too! Ah, I can only sing some of his songs, not all, which was a little disappointing :(.
Thank you for the mention; you’re far too kind!
Babyjo - I didn’t go for his Snow, Wolf, Lake show too, so yes, I’m very happy I got to see some of it during the concert last weekend! (I had never watched Perhaps Love before too…). His personality is one of the reasons why he’s so popular until today, hehe. Good sense of humor and a very popular familyman!
Emily - Yeahh! And when the huge screens displayed song lyrics a la karaoke style, everyone switched to the ‘K mode’ liao, hehe. Anyway, I hope the concert manage to influence you to go qiong k again, some time soon! (Friends and I actually felt the itch already even while walking out of the stadium :p)
Victor - Well you should have been there to soak in the atmosphere yourself ;p
Siewpeng - I’m happy it made you feel that way. That’s what I like to achieve with my posts in my blog! Thank you for dropping by, too… come back often! ;D
Will - Well it was my first time at his concert and I’d give him a pass (with A++) for my standards! The feedbacks, ah… yes I noticed them too. Luckily it didn’t happen often, and Jacky as a seasoned performer was quick to react. I wish those feedbacks never had to happen :(
On the venue - we can’t be building a new venue (like those in HK) to hold concerts, can we :D How many international artistes come to this part of town to perform anyway ;). It’ll be under-utilized. Your points are understandble, but most people didn’t mind them. Thanks for the input, Will!
Ikea - Ah! He didn’t - thanks for reminding ;D
Sheila - Ohhh that dude’s car deserved to be beautified! I mean, for anyone who parks at a place where it may disrupt traffic, the least they could do is get back to their car ASAP! I got stuck for more than 1 hour inside Bukit Jalil carpark :(. We didn’t even bother to turn on the engine!
No, Bengbeng, really, I’m not a fan of his. His vocals + songs are real good though. I’m all for good music, whatever the language, whoever the artiste ;).
Oh on looks, truth be told, Jacky never faired well compared to the other 3 Heavenly Kings (three others being Aaron Kwok, Leon Lai and Andy Lau). We all like him for his vocal prowess and time has proven it - he’s the best singer among them all, good-looks or not! :) So, it’s time to show your hidden talents!
Angel - I didn’t jot down, he sang many, many more than that. Besides, I don’t know more than half of the titles LOL! Wah, Astro huh… funny ;p Of coz not… just across the river next to Bukit Jalil. It was still considered Bukit Jalil’s carpark, but for the other smaller stadium (which was closed that night).
OOoohhh… Ask Kenny to open a concert in Dubai then :p
Keeyit - Yes, his songs are timeless classics, everybody loves them regardless of whether they’re new or old songs!
HC - Your rancangan penyekatan memang berpatutan lar, judging from the kehuru-haraan you’re experiencing. So how, you settling your Petronas hutang ar?
Giddy Tiger - Desperate to take pics after seeing the other audience doing it… with digital cameras… I should’ve brought my camera along, could’ve zoomed in better!
Conancat - Indeed, he’s one of, if not, the best in the HKPop industry. Irreplaceable, he is! Hmm, these days the market thrives on popularity and marketability (hence looks!), less on the talent like how it used to be. Nevertheless, there’re a number of commendable talents (from the so-called ‘younger generation’!) that have made it big in the industry today…
ya..it’s fantastic! I agreed with every single words u said..it’s fabulous!
actually I just count it for fun..I dint thought of counted it right also..haha..luckily u have a camera phone la..somemore can snap it so clear..I wish I have a better camera phone..haha..
Woow u must be enjoying so much during the concert.
Pinmei - Well yes it was good. The phone actually performed pretty badly in the dark. Anyway, thanks for dropping by!
Darren - Could’ve been better - if only I knew how to sing every song sung that night!
yalo..im officially hutang keliling pinggang. haha~ but tat one next yr oni settle liao~
Yoohoo! A tag for you!
aiyooo… he so tiny in the pic. Jacky Cheung is not handsome but he can really sing well. His songs are really awesome!
Oh No! I missed his concert again for 3rd time! I already bought the RM318 ticket but I’m in Dubai suddenly… really wasted!
hi narrowband…
I attended Mariah Carey concert years ago in Merdeka Stadium, the sound quality was superb.. giving me goosebump when she sang all the hit songs.
If same sound system was there in Bukit Jalil minus out the feedback, think i will go crazy with the goosebump to have there.
One more thing, i hope they can create a free standing area for concert. When u r standing, the feel is different, u tend to sing and move with the singer more spontaneously… that’s what we did when Eason in Singapore… the feeling is wonderful.
I love all his songs. Wish I was there…
my hidden talents? oh i have none hidden or otherwise hahahahahahaha
My friend actually called during the concert, yea he sings superbly well with his heavy baritone. Long Live jacky Cheung!
Nice photo… the quality seems comparable to digital camera. New model?
Anyway, it must be a great concert. I haven’t been to any. Thought of reserving my first experience to The Corrs but they never come anymore. Now thinking hard who to go for…. Any recommendation?
HC - Aiseh like that panggil ‘hutang keliling pinggang’ ah… You also haven’t experienced the real hutang keliling pinggang yet…;p So anyway, bought your new Lumix liao? ;D
Rinnah - Thanks Rinnah! I’ll put mine up the next time Writer’s Block attacks ;p
ECL - Ya lo, I already measured his ‘height’ from where I was seated - about 1cm nia! LOL!
Kenny - WAH! You could have donated the ticket to somebody else!!
Will - Mariah’s? Wow, it must have been awesome! I really like her songs, especially the old ones. I used to buy her CDs! I think there were quite a number of people who ended up standing too, during Jacky’s concert - because they simply couldn’t see properly as the ground was flat.
Ah… Eason… the King of K-songs ;). You’ve been to some of the best concerts around, man.
Neo - You should have been there, then! :)
Bengbeng - Hahaha, you never know!
W-Economist - Gee, the telephone lines couldn’t have done Jacky’s voice any justice! You should have been there to soak in the atmosphere yourself! ;D
Saoirse - Ah, yes pretty new. Nokia N95; I’ll write a little bit about it soon, in response to Rinnah’s tag.
Ah, The Corrs! I used to listen to them too! But they’ve not been missing in action in recent years. One of the sisters acually came out and did things solo, if I’m not mistaken, right? To your question… I think it depends on who’s coming, and what kind of music you like… ;)
