Quiksilver Revolution Tour 2.0 at Sunway Lagoon
The 2008 Quiksilver Revolution 2.0 at the Sunway Lagoon’s surf beach saw some of the world’s best boarding actions performed on and off beach, much to the enjoyment of the appreciative Malaysian youths who mostly turned up revealing more skin than they usually do on normal days. It was a wicked beach party!

I must acknowledge Smashpop for extending the invitation, as well as Nigel for providing the passes! Truckloads of enthusiastic shutterbugs turned up with their prized shooting gears to capture the surfing actions at the surf pool, as well as the skateboarding stunts and tricks on the half-pipe.

Shooting the surfers was a little tricky simply because we were camping quite far away from where the action took place. My lens couldn’t do more than a mere 85mm focal length, so a little bit of post-processing was required to magnify the images :p I also tried to do an effect I learned last year, by varying the focus during shutter exposure.

Pretty cool eh? It’s much more difficult to do it on a moving subject. The 1200cc jet ski happened to be moving in my direction, so I seized that opportunity! Need more practice, this one. After the end of the first surfing session, we went over to the half-pipe, where the next action was going to take place.

The half-pipe was said to be imported from Australia specially for this event. We got to enter the ramp area to shoot, but we were warned of the dangers of straying flying boards in an event of a fall. It’s definitely not cool to be hit by a skateboard at high speed. There was once a skateboard did a “home run” and flew over the fence. Luckily no one was hurt.

It was amazing to be able watch these stunts performed at such close distance. I managed to snap some photos at some very interesting angles. Don’t ask me about these skaters’ names - I’m hopelessly clueless.

I love the blue, blue sky in the background. The sky was pretty clear in the afternoon, which explains the scorching heat.

This photo does not have any element to provide perspective. Nevertheless, the clouds in the background give a feeling that the skater was literally flying!

The crowd was made up of all races, nationalities, ethnicities and ages. Some gwai pohs were seen sunbathing too. I guess Sunway Lagoon’s surf beach is really the closest you can get to being on a real beach, here in the heart of Klang Valley.

Ah, the obligatory photo. What’s a beach with the bikini-clad chicks? Do you see one of the girls looked like she was about to undo her friend’s bikini? Haha.

Local act One Buck Short performed a couple of tracks, during which the crowd threw sand into the air and pushed everyone else in a frenzy (well, sorta). We covered our cameras with our shirt and walked swiftly out of the concert area. Madness.

Where there’s sand and water, there must be a photo of everyone’s foot together. Somehow this has become a trend. Save for those who wore shoes, we dipped our feet into the pool and gathered for a group foot-shot!

This couple really tickled me. Jen and I couldn’t help but laugh when the guy almost fell while trying to balance the girl on his shoulders. She screamed so loudly ok, so we just had to turn to look ;p

When surfing resumed, we went to a new spot where we could shoot from a different angle. The picture above shows how crowded the surf beach was.

We were much closer to the surfers this time around. Notice the two men standing in the water, at the back ground? Each of them had a camera, most probably official photographers covering the event. We guessed that their cameras were water-proof…

Check out that zoom lens. Professional photographers go to great lengths to capture the best shot, from the best angle - even if it means getting themselves soaked in water. I do not think I’ll ever take photography *that* seriously.

Before calling it day, we proceeded to the half-pipe once again for another round of shooting. That’s the order of the day - surfing, then skateboarding, and back to surfing, and so on. This time we stood on the other side of the half-pipe.

This skater was totally wicked. He demonstrated a couple of tricks with a microphone in his hand! He talked us through them as he skated, and he executed all of them perfectly. I thought that was pretty cool!

That’s the view of the half-pipe in the evening. Shortly after the end of the skating demonstration, we hijacked the place and took group photos. And SLR cameras were the order of the day… just imagine how they were passed around!

I didn’t get the name of the guy who took that photo for all of us. On a brighter note, he got to shoot with various brands and models with various lenses! It started to drizzle minutes after that, so we went indoors.

On the left is Simon, who lives in the same neighbourhood as I do! This could well mean more photography outings together in the future. Haha. Victor came straight from his workplace to join us! With a laptop in his backpack, no less…!

Smashie with his Sony Alpha A700. Awesome stuff. And uh, I can’t help buy say this - I finally got to see Smashie doing one of his trademark jumps, live. LOL… suagu-ness…
Have a good week ahead, everyone!
Short talk: Blog inactivity deeply regretted… haha. Really steamless throughout the whole week. Been busy, and a little off-focused lately…

Between, a lot of sexy babe there ya..
omg. I was there too. With sJ. But we ended up walking around, exploring the place more than looking at the actual event. ;b
Only watched One Buck Short perform the first 3-4 songs.. & then later watched some skateboarding, before leaving. It was scorching hot & the cooling shopping complex was definately a better choice..
YB - Hey man, yours are better! Gee. You still want an SLR? Your current one can pwn mine anytime! Nice meeting you!
Nigel - Hey, all thanks to *your* generosity! Haha. We will meet again, I am sure!
Angel - I seldom ‘happen’ one la :( This one is a rarity :( I had a good time tho! Current focus… NONE!! That’s why I say, out of focus - all blur blur now! I don’t know where I’m headed, what I’m facing, and where I am! It’s a little confusing… let’s see if I’ll be able to pen them down on my blog (kinda doubt it though - else it’d be another *very* personal entry!).
Smashie - Yes bro I know must come out often. If not I’ll grow mushroom on my skin. My pleasure, too!
Giddy Tiger - Yeah!! Happy CNY to you too!! Not advance anymore, people *are* already wishing each other!
Victor - Sigh man I need to learn to snap the chicas better… Yellowbanana has some good shots! Boy it was a fun shooting day.
Rinnah - I like them too! I took alotta pics and you know how difficult it is to filter out the ones that I *really* want to show you guys… -_-”
Mich - I am sure you do, Mich! You shot alot of their pics! Rite? Riittttee??
Jen - Thanks! It was my pleasure to be able to meet up with you, and the rest of the gang… lol. I’m a silent fan of all of you ;p
Jian - I didn’t try flying bro, I had my baby eos to take care of!! Nobody took off anyone’s bikini bro, what made you think there’s one? Haha. That would only happen in a different kind of party *rarely* held in Malaysia… hehehehe……
YB - Bro, I already showed off my best-est shot dy… wan more bikinis I’ll have to model myself… LMAO~
Keeyit - Well, then you gotta come and witness these sports for yourself!! The Asian X-Games is another such event where there are even more exciting sports…
Meishin - OMG we could have bumped into each other and it would have been a ’super-reunion’ of sorts! During One Buck Short’s performance we were right in front, just before the stage. Did you see everyone just pushed each other and played sand? Gee! It rained sands!
Ya when I went back inside Pyramid I couldn’t tahan liao, really needed to wash myself clean! Been sweating like a cow~
Dude, you have taken very nice shots especially those shot on the surfboard :-> Good actions shot.
BTW, when was this event? I didn’t see it advertise @ the news paper … errr… maybe i was in Penang too long :-p

TZ - Thanks bro! It was on the 26th of Jan! I didn’t see any publicity in the newspapers too :p
Che-cheh - Eh terima kasih bebanyakz… :D Still got alot to learn, especially from what I observed that day.
Sat - If you had bought the 450D - there’re less buttons LOL. Oh I must admit that some of the photos had been post-processed!
Deng - Not really, if you see take note of the dates these entries are published, you’ll see that I haven’t been updated regularly.
Jasonphoon - Sometimes the backs can be a very pleasant sight compared to the frontal view… :p
Mic - I learned that from DCM - Digital Camera Malaysia magazine… LOL!
Vickie - The sport has its dangers… even the photographers were in danger of getting hit by runaway boards too. Hehe.
