Malaysia International Fireworks Competition 2008
The Malaysia International Fireworks Competition (MIFC) is back in Putrajaya! This year is the second year the event is held, and it looks set to be an annual event now. Yesterday was Team Malaysia doing the opening act.

Last year’s MIFC I shot with only a Panasonic Lumix FZ-7. This year of course, is the first time I shoot with my baby EOS.

Unlike last year’s shows, the traffic in Putrajaya last night was surprisingly smooth. Maybe because everyone was still traumatised by last year’s traffic jams.

Since I couldn’t get passes to enter PICC grounds, I made do with shooting from the opposite direction, albeit on low, flat ground. I had a hard time finding a good spot though.

Some inconsiderate photographers who came later actually set up their tripods in front of me! I didn’t have the mood to reason with them so I carried my tripod to another spot.

Shooting without using a shutter-release cable was kinda challenging. I had to make sure the camera didn’t shake each time I pressed the button. I barely succeeded.

I took tonnes of photos but only about 40% of them were acceptable -__-”. It’s all about luck and skill polished from past experiences, which I have very little.

Photos were shot using mainly 17-85mm kit lens. My tripod was a PnS tripod so it was super lightweight and was prone to shakes too.

These are some of the cuter displays with smaller flares. Notice the little green flower-shaped fireworks on the right?

Don’t you just love these smaller fireworks. I wonder how they blended in with the background music (which was inaudible from where I camped!).

Anyway the next time I shoot at the MIFC, I will try to get a spot that allows me to capture at least one of Putrajaya’s scenic bridges in my photos. Right now there’s no perspective in my shots :(

I guess I should stop here lest I run out of things to say (I already got stuck from 4th pic onwards actually). LOL. That’s all for my series of MIFC Team Malaysia photos. I won’t be able to shoot Team China’s this Saturday because I’ll be down south! W00t!
For more information about the MIFC ‘08, check out the official website (is the site’s design really bad or is it just me?) at http://www.mifc.com.my/.
P/s. Did you guys watch Wong Mew Choo’s game? Although she did not emerge victorious, I thought she played very well with good fighting spirit! I am so proud!
P/s2. Holy cow RPK has been ordered to reveal identities of his visitors! The authorities are really coming down hard on him aye?

Nice shots :) Try self-timer next time, but that means you don’t get to use bulb mode. Hmmm..
Dude, ya got my YM’s msg? Desperate d.
Ray - Not a good idea. When I was setting up the tripod before the start of the fireworks, I tested with self-timer, works well, if you can tolerate the fixed 10-sec countdown and fixed shutter-speed (you gotta decide in advance!). It’s not worthwhile to give up BULB just for this reason. Better stick to BULB and try to keep hands steady. Besides, the photos mainly end up in my blog anyway, which is shrunk to a max of 500pixels-width :p Shakes not obvious. Btw there’s an online tutorial on how to make your own shutter release (build yr own circuit board. It’s actually quite simple also -_-”)
Jason - Seldom online YM one, hehe. Replied you dy. Don’t so kiamsiap, consider hunting in the market! You won’t regret one. Hehe.
I think the reduce in traffic is most probably due to most people giving Team Malaysia a miss. Too bad I’m in confinement now, if not sure camp there like last year. Why don’t you try shooting from Cyberjaya lake, from that view you can see the fireworks reflection on the water as well as the bridge (also the PICC) :D
Wah.. wonderful !!
Last year I went there, suffered on the bad traffic. Therefore, this year we din go lol..
WOW! Good job there Narrowband!
I prefer the green flower ones in smaller flare! While the other are nice, they are a little too garish, the smaller green ones are rare and very cool!
Mifc website is worst than my blog. hahaha Oppps
I don’t plan to go this year too. I just see photos from blogs…like yours.
ohh.. thot u din go tim… i plan want to go this wkend but i think wont jadi lor…

Nice shots as always. :)
I wanna go test out my noob photography skills but no one wants to accompany me so can’t go. Ish. :(
Nice shots nice shots! *thumbs up*
lol, u know i made a shutter release myself right? it’s very simple.
Bro, long time never leave comment d here haha. MIFC! reminds me of how u got stuck in the jam and someone came and asked for a ride. LOL…. awesome pics btw!
yea got what you meant about the website.. took one look at it and very naturally the hand would just go to the top right corner of the screen and again, very naturally the fingers would just click on ‘x’. :s Don’t have the urge to go again this year because last year’s memories was still very vivid.. hard to believe it has been 1 year!!
Mine has a 2-second timer, so I guess it’ll work? :P Heh thanks for sharing, will check it out if I don’t end up getting a shutter release cable :)
aww.. well bro dun be too humble on ur shooting skills, they are impressive and i’m not trying to say this for u to bed with me.. puik puik puik! haha.. though i gotta agree with u, tat the mifc website is a little turning off.. and it’s not just u and me i’m sure.. :)
The shots are great! How come I didnt notice the smaller flower thingy during the firework? -_-
ur pics are marvellous! still thinking if i should have go or not.. a little lazy but dun want to miss it :D
i heard from the others that the traffic is ok too.. =)
Beautiful shots… I didn’t go because scare of the jam.
waa… beautiful..! the last shot is great..!!!
Sue - I don’t think it was *that* great lah, but sure, if you’ve nothing to do, and live not too far away, just drop by and snap some photos lo. I was at that spot (by the cyberjaya lake) last year. But the angle was almost exactly 90-degrees from the side, you won’t be able to get the fireworks symmetry. Then again, it depends on what you want in the photo… the lake provided very nice reflections though!
Keeyit - This year they say the traffic not bad woh. Try to go again? HEhehehe. Chan re nao ma :p
Cc - Hehe thank you! Everybody loves those cute little drawings in the sky!
Che-cheh - That MIFC website don’t know done and maintained by who one, damn chekai~. Ohh I will try to capture more photos heheh… But watching live is different ma… Got sound wo!
Angel - Gooo! Sure go! Weekend also I tak pergi, but tonight I’m pergi-ing! Whee!
Pop - TONIGHT!
Rinnah - Thanks Rinnah. Gotta bring a tripod to make the trip worthwhile, if you’re serious, gimme a call le. Btw, I went alone last week leh. Hehe.
Thank you Day-dreamer!! You’re too kind hehe.
Will - Yeap I know. The schematic’s online. No time + lazy :p
Victor - Yaman long time MIA dy you! Yes I was at the exact spot where I declined to give them a lift. No such issues this time around *phew*. Thanks bro!
Drumsticks - Damn lame rite the site. Haha. And they wanna promote the event? Abit… malufying lor. Still remember I bumped into you during one of those nights! Yes I couldn’t believe it’s been one year too, until I checked my old blog entries and saw “August”. Time passes so quickly! :(
Raymond - You still miss 2-seconds of potentially beautiful capture :p
Jian - Dooooooode… that sounded just WRONG man!! Haha. Yea that website can close shop lah. I go there to check out the schedule only lar (which has since been picked up by many other sites).
Esther - Thanks! What were you doing that time? Too busy kap zai around there? Muehehe….
Cbenc12 - Thank you very much… Don’t be lazy, maybe next year no more liao! Who knows! You know how we always fail to maintain and keep up certain things! Traffic summore not bad, what else you waiting for! :D If you bump into me must call out my name wor.
Neo - Thanks man. No jam, no jam. Just go and have fun! Hehe. Everyone is afraid of the jam this year so they ended up not going.
YB - Thanks bro. Many other spoilt shots. Haha.
Nice shots! Remember the time when I went there with Julee last year, but now don’t have the time to go down although I am not working yet..LOL
