Peekaboo
Posted by narrowband - 27/09/11 at 11:09:42 pmHi. I’m back again. After a long while. You have no idea.
I’m trying to pick up writing again. Because I know blogging helps to keep my brain going, to some extent. And my photography, too. As it is, my camera is collecting dust. For a while my blog went dead, and displayed rubbish. It wasn’t my doing, I don’t know how it became like that. I managed to seek assistance from my hosting provider and restored an old backup. I can’t even remember when was my supposed last post, before I went on the unplanned hiatus.
I embarked on a big journey of self-discovery, soul-searching, and took a big leap of faith and pursued a flying career. I learned about people, about teamwork, management, about relationships, and I learned how to fly a jet aeroplane. Throughout all this, I gained some, and lost some. I lost some valuable friendships, since leaving Malaysia to reside in a new country. Don’t mean to say they’re no longer friends, but we don’t connect the way we used to.
My journey had taken me to Australia, where I did most of my flying. And trust me Australia is a really beautiful country, and even more so when viewed from the sky. Well I don’t even know who still visits my blog. I know I’ve got a little over a hundred RSS subscribers, still. Hello again :)
Upgrade In Progress
Posted by narrowband - 01/08/09 at 01:08:53 pmNarrowband.org is being revamped. Thanks to Satkuru for tips on WordPress database backup and version upgrade during a brief discussion last week! (Can you believe that the entire process was completed in about an hour?) Please feedback if you notice any bugs or irregularities on my blog, while I try my best to eliminate them. I know some of the recent entries do not have any categories assigned – somehow the binding was lost during the import/export process. Will get that sorted out soon (most likely manually ;(… ).
I’m supposed to be studying for an exam, lol. Til then, updates will be scarce.
Psst: Love the simplicity of this theme ;p

The Year That Was: 2008
Posted by narrowband - 31/12/08 at 06:12:37 pmIn a few hours’ time we’re going to be ushering in the new year, with renewed hopes and dreams, resolutions and aspirations. Year 2008 has been eventful for me. There were good times as much as there were bad times. It started off pretty well actually – a lot of photo-taking, traveling and fun. Things began to slide as I approached Q4, which made me think that there was probably a small price to pay for being too happy earlier in the year. Anyway, on this final day of the year I’d like to take a stroll down memory lane and recap some of the highlights that made my year what it was.

To Round It Up…
Posted by narrowband - 30/12/07 at 10:12:29 pmWe’re seconds away from a spanking brand new year and let me tell you, 2007 has been nothing short of rewarding as far as blogging is concerned. I made many new friends and saw many new faces – each has their own writing style and their own legion of readers. Best of all, it is gratifying to know that some of these people actually do recognize you and have at some point in time dropped by your blog before.
Yesterday I had one such opportunity (possibly the final one in 2007) – to go out and meet several fellow Malaysian bloggers at Pavilion KL. Esther told me that there would be a free AVP screening, and asked if I was interested. As a freeloader, I’m always up for anything that employs the ‘no-payment’ scheme. After the movie, I was thankful that the ticket was free because otherwise I’d have kicked myself for actually paying to watch it. Oh right, this post isn’t supposed to be about AVP…

The Year That Was 2007
Posted by narrowband - 26/12/07 at 11:12:36 pmIt’s the time of the year again to review, recap and remember some of the highlights and most memorable entries on Narrowband.org. As many of you did not start reading me from January onwards, here’s an opportunity for you to walk down Narrowband.org’s memory lane (I know for a fact that at least one reader used to dig up my archives and read all the way til my maiden post on Narrowband.org!). The following are the selected entries, sorted according to the month in which they were published.
January 2007
And as the Internship Draws to an End… (Read)
One of the main highlights during this time of the year was my internship with a company that gave me much more than just a working experience. It marked the beginning of an extraordinary friendship that I thought I could only dream of.
How to Create a CSS Photo Gallery (Read)
I did a CSS Photo Gallery based on an online tutorial, and modified the codes to fancify the whole thing. I then wrote my own tutorial on how to do that – and for the first time in my life, I experienced the “Digg effect”.
Widening Narrowband.org (Read)
Some of you might have seen the original Narrowband.org layout – a two-column theme called Intense, created by Sadish Bala. I then altered the CSS to widen the layout and accomodate another column.

Friday Yak
Posted by narrowband - 03/08/07 at 10:08:10 pmCrap. I decided not to publish the entry I was drafting, again! It happens, haha :). That leaves me with almost nothing to write now. Been out for the past 4 weeknights. Company annual dinner was an eye-opener. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s PC Fair, where I hope to get my new harddisk. Although I’m happy with the laptop I’m currently using (newer, higher-spec and faster), nothing beats using something which you can claim is yours. Haha.
Came across this from Rinnah’s. Only 78% addicted lah me! That’s a good sign leh, not so serious yet. In fact, I haven’t been updating my site as frequently as I used to, no thanks to not being able to blog in office. Not that there was any restriction; it’s just me. But I do read my feeds ;). Google Reader has been wonderful. Nevermind the slow updates, I simply love the Gmail-like interface. Oh, I just found out that my colleague keeps a blog. I don’t know if anyone was supposed to know, but I accidentally caught a glimpse of his screen, lol! I was trying so hard not to blurt that I’m a blogger myself. I succeeded. Heh!
And then I’ve been going online using my phone lately. That explains – to some of you – why I couldn’t open the URLs you sent me. I tried opening both applications (web browser and MSN) simultaneously but after a while, the MSN automatically exits. I guess my phone hates to multi-task.

By the way, using MSN on phone is made possible by Fring. Have a great weekend, peeps. If you bump into me at the PC Fair tomorrow, dun shy shy yah?
P/s: Convocation next weekend!! *Excited*
Edit@Sunday, Aug 15 Aug 5 (Oops, thank you HC!): Finally bought a new internal drive for my laptop! Got it for a little over RM200 (120GB capacity). Spent the whole night formatting, re-installing OS, security apps and drivers. And because the PC’s relatively empty, it’s blistering fast now! *Whee*
Thrice Plagiarized: I’m Flattered Beyond Words
Posted by narrowband - 31/05/07 at 03:05:07 am[Edit@1331hrs: The author in Case Study 3 has edited his entry in a bid to inject a dosage of originality back into his blog. I consider this as a sporting gesture and I appreciate that. I'd like to also acknowledge angel for her kind support!] Perform a quick search on Google with keywords “impak maksima” and “yi nan wang”, chances are you’ll see Narrowband.org listed on the first page of the search results. My point is, these are among the top keywords that helped bring traffic to Narrowband.org lately. To many bloggers out there, traffic also means revenue. You know what I’m talking about?
Now, just so you know, I write my own contents. I construct my own sentences, I carefully choose my words and I come up with my own examples to illustrate my points. If I borrow some content from somewhere else, I acknowledge my source. Conversely, when someone uses my idea, words and examples without permission, I can get a little upset. Also, the fact that the contents are arranged in the same order as how I’ve written them irks me to no end. And I get particularly upset too if they use my contents to earn some income. I call them plagiarizers.
Let’s do Case Studies. You may click on my original entries and compare for yourself. In the following snapshots, I’ve circled (in red) the sentences that I feel are very similar to, if not exactly the same with mine.

So You Want to be a Blogger?
Posted by narrowband - 20/05/07 at 05:05:43 pmMore and more people are setting up their own blogs to write and share their thoughts, opinions, experiences and even skills with their readers. There are a number of things that I wish I could tell all new bloggers when setting up a blog. Here are 11 things I have in my mind:-
1. Get a Hit-counter!
One of the first things you might want to do when you first set up your blog is to get a hit-counter to monitor your traffic. The earlier you install your counter, the better. This is so that you won’t miss the first few visitors who visit your blog.
Personal tip: Stay away from Webstats4u.com (aka Motigo webstats, formerly known as nedstats), because your visitors will be annoyed by ilead.track.it popups.
2. Use a Nickname
I personally know many bloggers who choose to use their own real name or initials when they blog, which is fine, really. Short, given names are okay but full names? I would suggest to use your full name only when you understand what you’re doing – because it takes away your anonymity online and that’s irreversible unless you start afresh again. On the other hand, if you start off by using a nickname, you could gradually shed away your cloak of anonymity whenever you’re comfortable.
3. Blog Selectively
Think carefully before publishing an entry, because (and I always stress this) no matter how personal or private you claim your blog to be, it is always accessible to virtually anyone in the world who has an internet access. Whether it is something very personal, controversial, or offensive, be aware that in the cyberspace, you’re never alone. Your contents could be indexed and cached by search engines, or reproduced in forums, other blogs, or heck, even newspapers! So you think removing an entry solves everything? Not really. Unless you understand and do not mind the consequences, think twice before you write.
Related example: Last year, a teenage Singaporean blogger, Wee Shu Min had to remove an offensive entry just one day after publishing, because it drew a flak from thousands of people worldwide. She admitted that she didn’t expect to receive so many readers overnight. Indeed, her average daily hits was never that high. (It’s a long story but if you’re interested, Wikipedia could help you out. And yes, her original text is there too.)

Hiatus
Posted by narrowband - 25/03/07 at 11:03:16 pmI feel bad whenever I go on an unannounced hiatus. But the thing is, I used to mention that I’d take a break from blogging in my entries before but then less than three days later, I updated my blog again. So a hiatus rarely worked for me. This time though, it does seem real. I still open my feedreader once in a while but I’ve no time to read everything.

I’ve not updated in about a week, and I foresee that that will continue until at least next week. You won’t believe how much there is to be done. I’m gonna get through this, surely – it’s just a little rough, that’s all. Meanwhile, check out my blogrolls – they are Narrowband-endorsed links, so you won’t go wrong clicking them! :)
